Over 200 participants attended the debate co-organized by IRAS and GLAD

The event: “The End of Post-War European Order. The Consequences of the Russian Invasion of Ukraine” has provided a unique chance to discuss the most recent political events with key European experts. The interest in the topic was so great, that many people decided to stay, even though the venue was overbooked.

Since Russian military invasion into Ukraine, fighting has caused over nine hundred civilian deaths and pushed millions of Ukrainians to flee to neighboring countries. These events had not only humanitarian but also political, economical and security consequences. The background and possible scenarios of the conflict were the main topic discussed during the debate by:

  • Rüdiger von Fritsch, former German Ambassador to Poland and Russia
  • Jan Piekło, former Polish Ambassador to Ukraine
  • Bogdan Klich, Polish Senator, former Polish Minister of National Defence

The opening remarks have been made by Prof. Paweł Laidler (The Dean of Faculty of International and Political Studies) and David Gregosz (Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung), followed by a vivid Q&A session, moderated by Dr. Dominika Dziwisz (Director of IRAS and GLAD Programmes) and Dr. Iwona Reichard.

Invited experts have been asked by students about their predictions regarding tensions between Russia and neighboring NATO member countries, possible alliance security commitments, as well as broader ramifications for future cooperation on critical issues (like arms control, cybersecurity, nuclear nonproliferation, energy security).

The debate has been co-organized by International Relations and Area Studies BA programme, Global and Development Studies - GLAD, New Eastern Europe, Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung and Faculty of International and Political Studies, UJ.
